Papa Flo
I have no words, just love.
Bye, bye
After almost four years in Karlsruhe, today I left for good to become… homeless. 🙂
As I already wrote in a previous post: for the coming weeks (probably months) I will be living lean and mean, with only the stuff I can carry and/or roll.1
One of the last items of furniture I own, is the couch I am sitting on right now, while writing these lines. It will hopefully get picked up by its future owner on Monday. The Saturday after that I will get rid of my bed and my desk and that’s it!
It feels incredible.
During our lifetime we tend to amass an unbelievable shitload of crap. A couple of years ago I made myself the promise to throw out all the things I hadn’t used (or worn) in over a year. In the last couple of weeks I still managed to gather a huge pile of stuff, that I wasn’t using (anymore) and that wasn’t worth keeping.
I donated half of my wardrobe to the Oxfam second hand shop2. I put most of my books into a public bookcase. I sold bikes, toys, old electronics3, shoes and furniture. This will actually pay for my trip to New York at the end of this month!
I am now able to just pick up my backpack and my suitcase and go wherever, whenever I like.4
And I will definitely take lots of pictures, wherever I will go.
The good thing about those is, that they don’t weigh anything and they need no physical space, so I can take (and keep) as many of them as I want.
- Meaning: A backpack and a suitcase. I will make a list of all the items in the coming weeks (and probably add some pictures as well). ↩︎
- In Germany most of the organizations that are collecting old and used clothes are commercial businesses, and not charitable organizations they would like to be seen as. So if you really care, where your stuff ends up, check fairwertung.de. ↩︎
- If you still have an old Sony WM-DD–33 Walkman lying around: sell it on eBay! ↩︎
- I am very lucky that I can earn my living in a way that is pretty much location-independent. ↩︎
2013 review / 2014 preview
This year has almost come to an end. Businesswise I am pretty happy how things developed in 2013: Fewer projects, but projects with higher value (and budgets) and in a variety of industries, made for a pretty interesting mix.
Traveling was also very good:
- I started out in Istanbul. I highly recommend a visit to this amazing city.
- A tour of the balkans followed in March, of which I have posted photos of Prizren (Kosovo) and Tirana (Albania) on my photo blog. This was also one of the most cost-effective trips of my life, as I only needed 350 Euros for the 2-week trip (including food, lodging and transportation).
- A short trip to Berlin in August.
- I visited WordCamp Europe in Leiden (Netherlands) in October.
- A trip to the US (Florida and New York) and Argentina Buenos Aires completed this year’s travel endeavors.
The motto for 2014 is somewhat bipolar. Part one, I would like to call “consolidation”: I want to grow my business and change it somewhat, to have a more stable and predictable income – which is not always easy, if you are self-employed. But I have some ideas and new contacts and I am pretty confident that something cool will come out of these co-operations in 2014.
I still have not decided, what I want to call the second part. “Nomadic life” could be an appropriate term for what I have in mind, as I am planing to leave Germany some time in April to live in different places – where exactly is yet to be determined. I will keep working the whole time, which means that “traveling” is probably the wrong denotation. It will be a lot slower, compared to how I usually visit new places. Some blogs, I recently found, use the term “digital nomad” to describe people, that earn their living with “web work” while traveling. So there – 2014 will be quite interesting!
I wish you all a Happy New Year!
Vacation coming up
I am so looking forward to my upcoming vacation. It will be my second visit to the US and my first to Argentina, and South America for that matter. I will bring back photos!

Can’t wait to get going!
Great Birthday
We had a great time on Saturday – and Sunday morning for that matter. 🙂
Thanks to everbody that showed up! You may all come again anytime!
