About Photographing Daily

There was a discussion on Mastodon a while ago about posting photos daily on a photo blog and the struggle this presents. After all, nobody gets a great shot every day. Should you post work that is subpar – at least according to your own standards?

Robin asked:

So both of you, who have been doing this much longer than me, would still say that the overcoming and the constant struggle pay off in the end?

My reply was:

I think so, yes. I feel I go through phases, where sometimes, I have too much going on in life and it is hard to be creative during a grocery run. But even if I didn’t get anything good (at least in my own opinion) I am still practicing, looking for images. And through posting I hold myself accountable. So when I am actually inspired (and have some dedicated photography time), it makes it all the more rewarding. 🙂

My photo blog would be pretty empty if I only posted images I am really proud of. Also, the photos I treasure most are usually of my children and family, and I rarely share those.

The point was – and still is – to make photography a habit, an integral part of my life. Having this obligation to post at least one photo every day keeps me on my toes.

After all this time, it does not feel like a chore. I do not need a reminder to do it. It just happens as the day goes by.

And on those rare occasion that I find some dedicated photography time it’s all the more rewarding to post images I really like from the day’s yield.

Definitely worth it!
